Founded the Houston group at a local restaurant a couple of years ago, and the rest is history.... I came across Rails and Ruby when I was trying to decide what technology we should use in a startup I was founding. We heard about Rails from a friend, bought the AWDWR book to see what it was all about, and two weeks later had a working prototype. Our product is currently in use by several law enforcement agencies, and the number is growing.

I own an independent consultancy in the Houston area named Bison Consulting. A few months after hearing about Rails, I jumped in with both feet in March, '06, just as version 1.0 was coming into being. Ruby and Rails were a pleasant surprise, after enterprise-level Java development for 5+ years. Big fan of the JRuby project, and looking for an opportunity to use it in the near future.

I finally discovered Ruby and Rails in the winter of 2006 and have been trying to transition over to the technology ever since. I have a 15 year background primarily in Microsoft and Java development, and I am currently working for a project management consulting company doing .net development. I put together this houstonrb site as a way to get more familiar with ruby and rails.
