Founded the Houston group at a local restaurant a couple of years ago, and the rest is history.... I came across Rails and Ruby when I was trying to decide what technology we should use in a startup I was founding. We heard about Rails from a friend, bought the AWDWR book to see what it was all about, and two weeks later had a working prototype. Our product is currently in use by several law enforcement agencies, and the number is growing.

I own an independent consultancy in the Houston area named Bison Consulting. A few months after hearing about Rails, I jumped in with both feet in March, '06, just as version 1.0 was coming into being. Ruby and Rails were a pleasant surprise, after enterprise-level Java development for 5+ years.

I tend to be stronger on the "back end" side of things (e.g. system design and integration, database design and administration, deployment). I'm always working on improving my "front end" skills, though.

Someone suggested ruby to me back in 2005 when I was writing a log parser. One thing led to another and the next thing I knew I was watching the rails screen casts. Ever since then I kept stumbling into rails work or even kindly suggesting rails for development projects. Here I am, in 2008 working full time as a Rails developer as J2EE fades slowly in my rear view mirror.

I'm C/Unix hacker who got interested in Ruby back in '02 or '03. Since then Rails appeared and turned web development on its head, and the fallout from that has been fun to watch. I don't use Ruby or Rails in day-to-day work, but I'm very interested in the development of Ruby and Rails and the related shifts in the larger community. At the moment my work happens to be Java but hopefully Erlang will be making an appearance sometime soon.

I'm the co-founder and GM of CPAP.com and CPAPtalk.com. I coded in Perl and PHP in the good old days. I switched to the business side early on and have been stranded over here since. The things people are doing with RoR are impressive and I've found myself running through tutorials for fun. I'd like to get better connected to RoR and the people who develop in it.

Justin Sunseri

Leo Grove

Reformed 13-year Java Developer/Architect, now I program exclusively in RoR (with all the trimmings so maybe exclusively is not quite the word). Although I made a good living as a certified java developer over the past decade, Ruby just takes web development to whole other level. Watch out though, master RoR's intricacies and nirvana will be yours, otherwise you may found yourself stuck in Dante's Hell.
